Bremen musicians for a day

Have you heard about Bremen musicians? We have! It was one of the stories my mom used to read me when I was small. Travelpie and Jam became Bremen musicians for a day 🙂 Also, here is the picture of me with them.

meandbremenmusiciansThe city of Bremen is very small and walkable within a few hours. We arrived there by plain and took a tram (beware of those tricky ticket machines) which lasted no longer than 15 minutes, crossing the river Weser on our way. We were met by light rain and a lady offering us freshly baked sweets before starting our weekend adventure.

Having taken the Bremen city map from the Information centre, we went to the fair in the Old Town where we bought some delicious bratwursts – how can you not have one when you’re in Germany? Afterwards, when we finally made our stomachs warm with a very descent portion of potatoes omelette and local beer (Becks Gold) in one of the cafes, we went onto exploring the oldest parts of the city.

Schnoor is one of the old Bremen neighbourhoods and has a couple of narrow and charming streets. It is full of shops which attract a lot of tourists’ attention. One of them is an all year round Christmas shop which I simply could not resist. The quality of all the toys and decorations inside is incredible, but I believe it is slightly overpriced in comparison to the shops which you can find at a Christmas market. Nevertheless, the shop was full even in October!

Unfortunately the weather did not get any better, but this did not discourage us from having a wonderful time. We still managed to have a romantic stroll next to the river under the rain before going back into the city and exploring the rest of the Bremen sights.

There are a number of beautiful churches from around 13-th century, the most worthy of the mention being St Peter’s Church.

The Town Hall and the Roland Statue which are situated nearby, belong to the Unesco heritage sites. Moreover, the city is very proud of the story about local Stadtmusikanten and there are a lot of statues of the musicians throughout the city, the main one being the one on the very first picture in this blog. For that one, you would need to be ready to queue to take a picture.
We did not have much time to explore more of Bremen, but I believe we saw and told you about the main sights of the city. You may as well consider visiting the park right next to the railway station when the weather allows.

I hope we encouraged you to travel to Bremen. Here is a picture of a windmill:
